today I changed a lightbulb!

1.  I’ve built a house with only bodies, tools, and an old tractor and lived in it through several minnesota winters.

  • no running water // pumped and carried gallons and gallons all year round
  • no indoor plumbing // I’ve dug a few outhouse holes & braved them through the seasons
  • no electricity // made enough candles in late summer to last all through the dark winter
  • wood heat // chainsawed, split, stacked, and carried wood for cooking, baking, and heating all year round.  kept a fire going twenty-four hours a day all winter long.

today I changed a lightbulb that had been out for months, and I felt a real sense of accomplishment.  serious satisfaction and power.  no kidding.

I’ve felt the same way repeatedly this year when I’ve done things like…

  • picking up a 2x4 that I’d been stepping over on my way to the shop for about four months
  • sharpening blades that had been dull for a year
  • remembering to carry a coffee cup in from the car

I’ll probably continue to make some lists like this to remind myself that I really can do real things.
